FORMER DIRECTOR GENERALS
1. DR. CLEMENT APAAK
Dr. Clement Apaak was a Director-General of Ghana Education Service. He was born on June 11, 1970. Dr. Clement Apaak was a member of the seventh Parliament of the 4th republic of Ghana.
He represented the people of Builsa South on the flag of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He holds PhD in Archaeology from the Simon Fraser University in Canada. He also holds M.Phil in Archaeology from the University of Bergen in Norway.
Dr. Apaak has International Certificate in African Archaeology from University of Brussels. He also holds Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Archaeology from University of Ghana, Legon.
Dr. Clement Apaak introduced educational programmes, which have promoted Ghana’s Education sector to a level great achievements.
As appointed officer of Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Apaak could not allow anything to interfere the purpose for which he was assigned duties. He made teaching and learning and implementation of educational policies effective and efficient.
2. MICHAEL KENNETH NSOWAH
Currently the Chairman of Ghana Education Service (GES) Council, Mr. Michael Kenneth Nsowah once served as the Director-General of the service.
When he was Director-General for Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Michael Kenneth Nsowah did very well and put up improvements in the education sector.
There were great initiatives under the Directorate of Mr. Michael Kenneth Nsowah during his term at the Ghana Education Service headquarters.
3. JACOB KOR
Mr. Jacob Aaworb-Nang Maabobr Kor was appointed the Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES) in 2015 by former president, John Dramani Mahama.
Jacob Aaworb-Nang Maabobr Kor, popularly known as Jacob Kor was born on 21st September, 1959. He hails from Nandom, a town in Upper West Region, and married with three beautiful children.
During his term of office as the Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Jacob Kor brought several initiatives, which were seen as the positive factors for Ghana’s Education.
4. BENEDICTA NAANA BINEY
Mss. Benedicta Naana Biney served as Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES) from April, 2010 to 2014 January. She officially retired from the GES at the time.
Even before she became the Director-General, madam Benedicta was appointed the Deputy Director-General the service in 2007.
He was privileged to serve as House Mistress and Ass. Headmistress in Shama Senior High School.
Under her leadership as Director-General at GES, Naana Biney was zealous to achieve great goals with her roles. She proposed and implemented several educational policies which served as bedrocks for Ghana Education today.
5. BANNERMAN-MENSAH
Mr. Samuel Bannerman-Mensah was appointed Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General in January, 2007. Before his promotion to this office, he was Deputy Director General of the service.
As an educationist, Bannerman has attend several diplomatic meetings on educational programmes and policies.
He championed education policies, which elevated the Ghanaian basic education.
6. ALEX TETTEY-ENYO
Also a politician, Alexander Tetteh-Enyo was once Director-General at the Ghana Education Service (GES). He was also a minister for education between 2009 and 2011 in Ghana.
Alex Tetteh-Enyo was Director for Education at the Dangme East District of GT. Accra Region. He once served as GT. Accra Regional Chairman as well as National Vice President for CHASS from 1987 to 1989.
During his term in office as Director-General for Ghana Education Service, Alex initiated policies which elevated basic education at the time. It can be said that wherever education has reached in Ghana, he has been part of the progress.
7. CHARLES AHETO TSEGAH
Mr. Charles Aheto Tsegah has served in Ghana’s education sector for over 26 years. He served as a Deputy Director General of Education, and was the Head of Quality and Access of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
When he was appointed to the position of Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Charles Aheto Tsegah was very effective to the development and implementation of educational programmes and policies.
His dedication to working to elevate the standard of Ghana’s Education was indelible, as the impact remains forever.
8. PROF. KWASI OPOKU-AMANKWA
Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa was the first Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES) of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s regime.
When he was nominated and appointed as the the Director-General, he was seen as a game changer of Ghana’s Education. An experience Lecturer, who also doubled as the Dean of International Programme Office at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
When he was the Director-General at GES, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa was visionary as well as Ghana’s Pre Tertiary Education is concerned. He made educational policies and programmes effective and efficient.
9. DR. ERIC NKANSAH
Dr. Eric Nkansa is the current Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES). He was appointed by the president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
The appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansa faced so many controversies from the Ghanaian society, especially issues raised by Teacher Unions picking stance that he was not qualified.
Despite all the controversies, Dr. Eric Nkansah was approved to the office of Director General of GES and two Deputies attached to assist him.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that Ghana Education Service is blessed to have received the services of the stated former Director Generals.
Even as the office of Director Generals of GES seem to be the biggest, the highest decision making body at the Headquarters is GES Council.
