Sarkodie, born Michael Owusu Addo, is a Ghanaian musician and one of the rappers who has carved a niche for himself by raping in his local languauge(twi). Not only has he gained popularity in the African music industry but also on the global stage.
Early Life and Musical Journey
Born on July 10, 1985, in Tema, Ghana,. Though he was born and raised in Tema, Greater Accra region, he truly traced his route from Juaso, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Sarkodie began and completed his primary education in Tema, Ghana.
After completing his basic school education, he got admission to attend Tema Methodist Day High School to pursue Visual arts and obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate. Stonebwoy, one of the top musicians in Ghana, was his schoolmate.
After attaining SHS certificate he further moved on to upgrade his artistry by getting a degree in Graphics and Design from IPMC.
Sarkodie developed a love for music at a tender age (age 4). He was deeply influenced by hip-hop legends such as Jay-Z and Obrafour. He began pursuing his musical aspirations, participating in rap competitions and freestyle battles around his neighborhood. He had his breakthrough when he joined the “kasahare level” on Adom Fm. He was crowned the overall rap champion in Tema. He caught the attention of music legends such as Castro, Kwaw Kese. He also met his manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment.
In 2007, Sarkodie caught the attention of Ghanaians with his remarkable delivery and lyricism in his hit single, “Baby,” which was later featured on his debut album, “Makye.” He quickly became a household name in Ghana, due to his touching punch lines.
